dino vs. synthetic running temps
 
I changed oil last week for the first time since a top-end rebuild on my 82SC. The car had Castrol Syntech since the rebuild, but I went with Castrol GTX 20w50. I don't drive it that hard and I perform frequent oil changes. However, after a ride, I noticed that the oil temp gauge was reading slightly higher than it was prior to the oil change. Is this normal? Does synthetic run somewhat cooler than dino?

Yes it does. The reason is that the more consistent viscosity of the Synthetic makes the oil coolers more effective at transferring heat.

The dino oil will tend to thicken up and slow down near the cooling surface of the cooler, where the dino oil will keep flowing, increasing the amount of oil that can be cooled by the outside air.

I've noticed a 10-15 degree difference between dino and synthetic.

Tyson, what synthetic(s) are your experiences with?

A not-too-technical guy at the track claimed he got a 10 deg temp drop going from mobil 1 to redline (on a 930). Can anyone lend credence to this...?

I'm comparing dino oil to Mobil 1 synthetic. I have no experience with Redline other than in a transmission.

My experience has been similar, but cannot quantify. The synthetic seemed to run considerably cooler?

15W-50 mobil 1 (right?) and what Dino? Seems like weight grades could make a difference here on top of the synth/dino difference...

Yes, 15W50 Mobil 1 versus 20w 50 dino.
