Front wheel bearings-930
I went to repack my bearings on my Gemballa and saw that it has the 930 set-up,i.e. not the nut used on the 911 but a circular pad with a threaded center. Does anyone know how to remove this and how to adjust the free play? It looks as though a puller of some sort is used to remove the pad to get at the bearings......Help. Thanks

Too big to fail

Inset a bolt in it, grab onto it with something, and yank it out.

doc18015,
It’s been a while since I serviced my front bearings but doesn’t the circular pad have two grooves on it? Simply insert a flat head screwdriver into one of the slots and gently tap the pad counter clockwise. |

I use a 12" x 3" x 1/4" piece of metal that I purchased at Home Depot and drill a hole in the center of it large enough to pass a bolt that will thread into the dust cap. I thread a nut onto the bolt - allowing enough thread to go through the metal plate and into the dust cap. Make sure that the metal plate rests on the wheel studs. Once the bolt has been threaded into the dust cap far enough I draw up the nut against the metal plate and it backs-off the dust cap.

I am amazed at how much much force is required to pull those caps off!

Sounds good! I will try that this weekend. I wonder why Porsche did not use the same design as in other 911s? How is the bearing free-play adjusted when reassembling? Is the cap just hit back on? I will see when I take off the dust cap, but I am assuming that a nut is in there. Many thanks to the fine people on this board.

Reassembly - After the hub/bearings slide back on, there is a washer then a large nut with a set screw. Install the washer, then the nut (with the set screw already threaded a bit). Twist the nut until it is snug. You should be able to slightly move the washer under the nut with a flat screwdriver (but the hub should not be able to wobble). It is a delicate balance that I took a guess at - an it appears to work. The cap taps back on with a metal hammer (easily).
