74 911S Paint Job

Hey Gang,

Thinking of painting my 74 brown beauty and wanted to pick some brains. It's been repainted with an attempt to match the original color but the job was done by Earl Schibe (you remember them? $89.99 for the complete job) anyway the paint job sucks.

I want to repaint the original color but the wife wants a change. I'm gonna win this one. My questions are...What is the best way to strip to bare metal? Chemical, or low pressure media or sand blast. A local shop here says they can do a beautiful job with low pressure sand. They follow it with an etching primer.

Also, the paint shop is pushing for the base coat /clear coat system as opposed to the original Porsche enamel.

What are your thoughts on all this.. Thanks, Jim

changing the color demands a lot of parts removal probably including the engine. Sand finds its way into hidden areas and can thus be a pia. "Aircraft Stripper" available at body supply shops gives good results. If you go original you may be able to avoid door removal and other time consuming work. Even so the same color should have windows and fenders removed, at least. Shops like to use paint systems they're comfortable with.
Personally an acrylic urethane, non-metalic, and non-clear can be beautiful and street doable, meaning a future match is easy. Imron is a bit overkill. If you use the shop tell them you want DX-40 primer tinted close to the top coat..

I just finished a chemical strip (aircraft stripper)of a Texas car with large areas of cracked paint (presumably from hot weather) It involves a lot of work .I used wide masking tape over all the seams first This prevents paint damage inside areas which are hard to get at later. After stripping large areas I removed the tape and powerwashed . I sanded paint off up to the edges. I ended up removing the bumpers, F&R windshields, door handles, rockers, mirrors and all lights and reflectors. There are rubber gaskets under and between many parts to be replaced. I considered a color change (presently black) but decided it involved too much additional effort inside the doors trunk engine compartment etc.I turned the car over to a body shop last week to finish. They are going to metal prep, epoxy prime ,highbuild prime block it out and paint all the pieces off the car with single stage urethane. Then I reassemble I have kept the price down to about $1200 vs their original quote of $3500 . It may or may not be worth it but I used a pool of cheap (teenage sons)labour during the winter.I used the savings for SSI,s and all new suspension bushings and swaybars instead.
