oil cooler
I'm thinking about getting a mocal kit for my 911. Would anyone recommend these kits, and if so which size cooler would you recommend for a 2.7. I might do some engine upgrades, so something with a little growing room would be good.

Yes, they are fine. You must be careful because the BAT instructions for installation of the thermostat and the Mocal ones are different. Call to speak with them 1st.
Also, if you get the big spoiler mount cooler you will need a new front spoiler as the cooler cannot fit behind the original valence. There are a few options but not all are 'cheap'. Tristan |

I am probably going to get the Mocal Oil cooler kit for my 911, but I was really wondering which oil cooler to get. They have several different sizes with different amount of rows. How many rows do I need for 2.7 that might be swapped someday, so i want some growing room?

They offer 2 kits from what I recall. I installed the smaller kit on my SC and it works fine on the street. On the track, on a HOT day it's not enough though, at least for my SC.
The bracket fit nicely and the hoses were a nice fit as well. You can do a lot worse. |

BAT has a Mocal kit for the 911 that uses a 19-row cooler. I have been told that it's marginal for use on a 911. I'd recommend you go larger.
FYI, I used a Carerra cooler w/o fan and at the track I still can get fairly warm oil temps on my 73E (2.4L). I have a battery box in the way of air flow to the cooler, so that reduces its effectiveness.

Besides cost (or room), why wouldn't someone go with the larger unit? The engine can't run "too cold" as long as the thermostat is operating correctly - right?

I would recommend the elephant racing "widemouth" carrera type cooler with ducting (ducting described in other threads), or a front-mount cooler for track use on that size motor. Between the two of those it depends on your priorities. Front mount is better at the track but requires a different bumper or at least a different valance, and is a bit more vulnerable.
I just put one of the elephant racing widemouth coolers in on my 3.0, and I definitely need to duct air to it for track work at higher ambient temps. I do believe that it will be sufficient once I add the ducting, however. btw: if you are not tracking the car, the mocal might be just fine. my experiences are geared toward DEs.

I'm thinking about going with the Mocal 44 row cooler kit from BAT. Does anybody know how difficult it is to install a Mocal Kit. I also like the elephant racing products, but they're on the expensive side

Wayne has a write up in the Pelican technical papers that shows how to install a Mocal cooler.

Well, thank you for the advice. I am only 18 years old and a college student, so I'm just trying to get a lot for my money.

I installed the smaller Mocal unit (fender mount) on my car with a 6 inch Spal fan. Worked great with the 2.7 (never got above 180F on the street and 210F on the track). Now, with the 3.2, it struggles to keep it right at 180F on the street. Max temp I've seen (in Alabama summer heat) is about 185F on the street.

Well, I would sell the BMW. but then I would have to drive the 911 to college, and that would be a little to scary for me. I'd rather run to mileage up the BMW, and let it get the door dings instead of the 911. I'm probably going to go with the 44 row Mocal kit. It seems like it would be more than enough.

As of right now, I am not going to race my car. I haven't the funds or the time to do so. It is a possibility that I might in the future.

Is this cooler going in the fender or up front?
I have been told that the Setrab cooler is a better unit, but you are not going to get a bolt in kit going that route. Avoid having the thermostat up front if that's the way the Mocal is designed. Seems to me that was the case on their setup for the 914 that I considered. |
