3.6 Conversion On Again! But...

Well, after a hiatus to take care of a newborn, I'm back on the 3.6 conversion trail. Today's challenge is the assembly of the RSR Pressure Plate and Throwout Bearing. Got some issues (lack of knowledge!).

First, this is an '87 (G50 car) so keep that in mind. Now, look at this image:

OK, that looks ugly, I think the BBS downsampled it. The captions are:
1 - Bearing Housing
2 - Thin Shim
3 - Spring Washer, Convex toward bearing housing
4 - Pressure Plate (not shown...)
5 - Thin Shim
6 - Thick Washer, beveled surface away from bearing housing
7 - locking clip

This 'seems' to be the right order (I have no G50 vintage shop manual) comparing with the old dual mass pressure plate. However, you cannot get the locking clip installed if you take this route.

'nother question. Clutch does go with the raised spring pack toward the engine, doesn't it?

OK, this was just a gratutitous question to show the RSR flywheel. But do let me know if I am wrong.

Thanks,

Chris Brown

And the answer is...

Well, since the BBS didn't come up with anything on this, I contacted Dr. Steve Timmins and he was gracious (and quick!) with an answer. I've reproduced it below to make this thread useful to someone else in the future.

Place the throwout on the floor on the “ears” (1)

Drop on a thin shim (2) (you may use 1 or 2, I generally use one, they are sold as replacements and the second can account for wear)

Put on the spring washer with the prongs toward the shim (3) (outer ring up and not in contact with TP

Put on the clutch pressure plate

Put on the retaining washer (6) with the beveled surface “up” (will have recess for retaining clip)

Sit down near the assembly and put your feet on the pressure plate, pushing down hard. This will flatten spring washer (3) enough to allow you to put on retaining clip (7)

When assembling the clutch make sure to put the snout of the clutch towards the flywheel contra regular 915/G50 clutch. Otherwise you will wish you had.

Assembly order is:

1) Flywheel

2) New ring gear (should hug pressure plate)

3) clutch disk

4) Pressure plate

5) 3 washers per bolt

6) 2nd ring gear

7) Bolts

when I did my clutch replacement I think that took me 45 minutes alone, good thing I was at a auto skills center and they had real mechanics to help. Good luck with it, your going to love the 3.6 and it's power.

Whew!

Just did this per Dr. Timmin's instructions and it took about 30 seconds. Easy!

If only the rest of the conversion was this simple...
