gas cap emission failure 85' 911

Well I just had my emission test done and everything passed except the gas cap. What do I do now? Is the cap really bad or does their tester just not fit a porsche cap well? Where can I get a new cap? Do regular auto parts stores carry something that will fit? Has this happened to anybody else?

I had this happen to me in Ohio's E-check. The gas cap gasket is old and not sealing propery. You only need a new gasket (I think they're about $3) and then you will pass.

You guys are lucky. The smog station I went to just happened to have a gas cap which would fit my car.......at "bend me over" pricing, of course. Oh well, they let me tweek the mixture til I passed, so I could not complain. BTW, I passed with a gutted cat

mine failed too but........

I had an 1985 Targa that failed the gas cap test. The guy just looked at me and said "I'll be right back." He went into his little glass house and pulled a gas cap out of his bag. He brought it over and used it for my test. I passed with flying colors.

If your cap fails, ask to see the test. Some of the adaptors are not deep enough for the cap to seal properly against the seal. Instead they bottom out without sealing.
If you need another cap, go into any gas station, they all have a box under the counter and they give them away!

I went and bought one from Napa for $8.50 and passed the test. Now do I stick with this cheap plastic one? Buy a whole new one for $20? Or just get the gasket for my old one? How important is a good cap?
