thin or thick

How do I know which flange I need before buying SSIs? I understand there is a thick flange and a thin flange.

Thanks!!

take a peek under the car. on my 75, the flanges were thin about 1/4 inch. on my SC, i was blown away with the fat flanges. i havent measured but they are obviously thick. about 1 inch? maybe.

I've been down this road before....Check out the responses I got (user name Deralik) to this question on Reenlist. There is a photo comparing the thick v. thin. I hope you have better luck than me.

So, I have a 2.7 and that should be a thin flange. Is that always the case?

I wuz informed by those who should know that thin flanges are for 3.0 and thick for 3.2. My 80 SC 3.0 (early build date) has thick flanges. Thick measure about 3/4 of an inch. Get your tired butt under your car and check it out. This confusion caused a lot of grief around here. To be sure, I called SSI and got the skinny from them's that know for sure. Now, getting it to pass CA smog without removing the entire SSI system every two years for the inspection is the next hurdle. "ROY" at Motormeister asured me that installing SSI's will require a dual inlet muffler, so I can't use my old one as it won't bolt up (duh). Same for the catalytic converter (duh again). He will however, sell me a double whiz bang "Ultra Flow" muffler (with decoder ring and secret handshake manual no doubt included) that will bolt directly to my SSI's resulting in increased HP, guaranteed to pass smog and good looks all for a mere $800.00 more. Can I really have my cake and eat it too.......or was that pizza pie?

Every motor under 3.2L will take the thin flange.

My 2.7 has thick flanges, too. It was a CA car and had thermal reactors until last week. The thermal reactors had a very thick flange and I ordered SSIs with thick flanges as well.

righto. my 81 SC stock has the thick flanges. only way to tell is to look. at least that is what i would do prior to dropping 1.4k on new pipes and muff.

as far as the magic muffler that will pass smog. i dont think so. ask roy what is inside that mojo muff that will remove the NOX that the sniffer loves to inhale. if not yet, i bet your SC will be invited to a SMOG only station the next round. my 81 was. and those are some pickyassbastards!

"ROY" at Motormeister" "He will however, sell me a double whiz bang "Ultra Flow" muffler (with decoder ring and secret handshake manual no doubt included) that will bolt directly to my SSI's resulting in increased HP, guaranteed to pass smog and good looks all for a mere $800.00 more"

Is the $800 for both the muffler & SSIs? Or?

First I would be talking with a different shop besides Motor Meister. Do a search and you'll find out why.

Also sounds like you answered your own price question. Roy said he would sell you a muffler for $800

I was quoting the early post by RBeralik using his personal pronoun, not mine.

Yes. Search this board about MM. I called them to buy their advertised basic rebuild kit for a 915 trans I got the basic "bait and switch" " My supplier can,t provide parts at the advertised price but we have the parts you need only 3x as much. My 1980 SC with 3.0 has thick flanges I was told 80 and up were all thickYou can put thin flange SSI on with a spacer to accomodate the extra stud length but not the other way around.

Actually, you can search any 911 board about MM -- this one, Early S, or Rennlist. You get the same answer each time. Avoid.

Cool

I got an answer to a question about thick or thin from MM once. I immediately ordered cheese stuffed and a couple of cold MGD's.

Good luck,
David Duffield
