Shipping FROM Canada
Does anyone know if there are any additional charged when getting used parts shipped from Canada to the US? Will Duty or Tax be charged on top of shipping cost?
thanks |

I'm pretty sure anything under $200 goes into the US without duty or tax. Anything over that gets duty unless its made in the US/Canada/Mexico. But like George Costanza said, "Duty is nothin', its like 2%". I think I had to pay 2.5% duty on some Webers I sold to a guy in Calif (I carried them across the border). Used or parts for old cars means nothing to US Customs.

I think the threshhold is $400 - at least that the $$ amount on the customs forms from the USPS. You might try the USPS website for more info:
http://www.usps.com/global/duties.htm Hopefully our Canadian friends can shed more light on this.

Use the U.S. Post office. If you use Fed-Ex or UPS it always gets goofed up in customs.

Always remember to clearly mark your shipment "used auto parts".

I've sold hundreds of items on eBay and shipped them from Canada to the US using regular Canada Post which hands the item over to USPS for final delivery. I've yet to have anyone come back and say they have had to pay any extra money.
On the flip side, when we Canadians get items sent from the US, we pay mega bucks in taxes and duty regardless of the amount. I ususally get the US seller to put the value very low so the hit is not that hard. Randy

I sold an engine to a guy in California a couple of years ago. His comment on receiving the stuff is that things became super simple once he told the customs officer that he was purchasing for his own personnal use. I don't remember the details, but the amounts he needed to pay appeared to be pretty small.

Hate to say this for the canadian sellers, but watch out for delays at the border when shipping from canada (or probably elsewere) to the US. I had some parts that I wanted soon take 3 weeks rather than the 3 days or so it would have taken inside the US. This stinks because it's not the seller's fault, it's the inefficient US customs process.
I did not have to pay any duties, but these parts were under $200.

If a US purchaser wants an item quicker from Canada, all they have to do is pay the extra shipping cost. Regular Canada Post/USPS shipping usually takes 10 to 14 days which is basically the same as a Canadian waiting for an item from the US. There is always the odd exception to the rule.
