Brake Light Sensor?

Checking my brake lights last night and it appears the brake lights do not come on until considerable pressure is applied to the brake pedal, instead of coming on immediately when the brakes are applied. Is this easy to adjust? A little explanation for a novice would be appreciated!

Same thing on my Carerra, you have to check if your BL switch is on the pedal or the dual pressure switchs on the master cylinder. If on the pedal, you have some adjustment, if on the master they must be replaced and Pelican has them for about $10 each.

I just had to deal with this weekend. I don’t have any pictures, but I'll try to explain the best I can from memory. My car is a little older than yours, but I think they are both pretty similar in this area.

1st thing to do is remove the carpet and your floorboards from the driver side of the car. Make sure to pop the accelerator linkage off of the go pedal before you try to remove the floorboard. Examine your pedal cluster, specifically the backside of the brake pedal.

There is a plunger/actuator rod attached to the back of the brake pedal. There will be a circular piece of metal about the size of a quarter on somewhere near the middle of the actuator rod. There should also be a pressure switch (look for the wires) attached to the pedal cluster. There will be a lever on the pressure switch that is in the path of the round piece of metal on the brake pedal actuator rod. As you press the brake pedal, the rod extends and the round piece of metal should press on this lever on the pressure switch. Adjusting the contact point between this lever and the plate on the actuator rod should adjust the amount of pressure needed to turn your brake lights on.

Hope that helps.

Just did this repair a few weeks back on an '86 911. I believe you will have the two switches on the master cylinder. There are a few other threads on the board that have all the instructions, etc... One thing I found that made the job a bit easier was to use one of the "gear" wrenches on the back switch. Otherwise, I think you have to remove a lot more hardware to get to it.
