Any 2.0 owners out there who built a Short-Stroke 3.2L?

Any 2.0 owners out there who built a Short-Stroke 3.2L?

Hi,

I asked Wayne what would be his pick for rebuilding my 1968L engine, and he suggested the "Short-Stroke 3.2L" engine mentioned in his book on 911 Engine Rebuilds......

I like my 901 tranny and he said it would bolt right on.........

Anyway, anyone out there with an early 911 featuring this configuration?

I have a 3.0 bolted to a 70-71 911 trans, this is a 901 with a pull style clutch like the 915's. That is one way, the other is the adatper flywheel to bolt a 901 to a late motor but I not sure where to get it. A carbed 3.0 with backdated exhaust is a LOT of fun in an early car! It would also be a lot cheaper than doing a 3.2 out of a 2.0.

Ok

Since I have SSIs / Muffler and Weber's.......correct me if I'm wrong.....I am looking to purchase just the long block 3.0SC engine?

(Forgive me, I'm just learning............I feel so clumsy askin' you Pros these questions)

What stuff do I need to attach those weber's to a 3.0SC ?

Also, will the engine just bolt into my car or does this require modifications as well...

OK, heres a few things you'll need to know. First the engine does just bolt in if you use the adapter flywheel or a 911 trans and clutch. I'll have a rebuildable core in about a month or two since my second gear synchro is getting worse I need to finish rebuilding my spare tranny. Second you'll either need the 3.0's oil tank or braided lines with adapters. You'll also need a braided line from the sump to the tank. You're gonna want to run a front cooler with any larger engine so buget that in as well. Third for the ignition you can run the 3.0's CDI box and recurve the distributer or go with MSD like I did (this is simpler) Fourth, You'll need to use the gauge senders from the 2.0. Fifth, you'll need some of the tin from the 2.0 and tweak it abit to back date the heat, you need the two piece that go on each side of the fan that the heater hoses attach to. And lastly for the carbs, you'll need everything from the 2.0 but you'll want to be sure to use the factory manifold insulators and double gaskets between the manifold and heads because the 3.0 has reliefs cut for the injectors and a single gasket will not seal properly. The factory insulators are phenolic I believe. I'm running Zenith's with 36mm venturis, 0.62mm idle jets and I think 1.65mm main jets. For Zeniths you have to drill your jets but for webers you can just buy these pieces. My favorite part of this conversion is that most people assume it's just a carbed S engine since the SC has a red fan shroud.

BTW, I'm not a pro! I've been modifiying vehicle since my first bigwheel LOL but I don't do this for a living. My '66 was my first P-car and I did this conversion a year after buying it, the car previously had a 2.0E with Zenith carbs. I consider the 911 engine to be the smallblock Chevy of the sportscar world since so many parts are interchangeable including complete motors. Heck I adjusted my valves last night and noticed a 901 part number on the upper valve covers!

Sorry I can't write alot now, but you can connact me for more info if required. I am fitting a 3.0ltr into a 72 car this week, this one is having SSI set up and retaining the CIS. Over the next few weeks I am also building up a my "short stroke 3.2" from an early 79 sc long block (ie 40mm inlet ports) 46mm carbs, S grind cams and HPX ignition, early exhuast with twin outlet muffler. This is going into a 1970 car with a late 915 box. If any of this info helps I can post pics as I do it.

Sorry if I sound conservative but all this fiddling with carbs and combining of pricey parts is probably fun but not terribbly cost-effective.

I suggest you to sell your tranny and engine and get yourself Carrer 3.2L engine toghether with 915 gearbox (prefferably from totaled car, you might get rebate for buying complete driveline).

901 is weak transmission and would be too high-strung for 3.2L torque. Building 3.2 or 3.4L from CIS 3.0 engine is also expensive and not efficient. Rdane's 3.4L CIS delivers same power as basic chipped Carrera mill, after throwing 12k$ on in.

If you like tinkering with engines then I guess you could start building stroked/bored engine out of your 2.0 or 3.0 but adjusting those carbs and getting all custom parts to work is PITA and will ultimately deliver as much power as 3.2, with equal (or more) money involved and lot's more job.

OK the point was that he likes his 901 box and wants to keep it. They are not as weak as many believe, after all the 901 box is basically the same box used in 914's even with V8 conversions. They are also not too "high strung" for a 3.0-3.4, the low gears only add to the fun! Besides getting a 915 to work in a '68 requires custom adapters for the axles as well as different length halfshafts. Last I checked those adapters are a "machine it yourself" proposistion since no one makes them. My suggestion was that he simply install a 3.0 and use his existing carbs and exhaust, this would be the simplest most cost effective way to increase the cars power. The 3.4 suggestion was only something to consider "down the road". Wiring a 3.2 with all it's electronics into a '68 would be a real chore, plus you'd need the fuel system to support it. This car already has the setup for carbs and since weber parts are easily interchanged why not do it? Once you have carbs properly setup they can be a real pleasure to drive and simple to work on.
