Also - another thing...
 

When I take my foot off the throttle - not driving - just revving the car up - it deccelerates nice and quick but then hangs around 2000 RPM ish for a second or two before continuing back to tickover - the car has always done this - annoying...

Can anyone tell me how to solve this????

Try plugging the line to the top of the decel valve.

Also, check to see if you are not running too rich.

Excuse my ignorance...

The deceleration valve is a small yellowish metal unit located to the left of the rubber air flow bellows on the top of the air box (when viewed from the back of the car). It kind of looks like a pear or a small pineapple. Its job is to slow down the decelleration of the engine the way you have described it, originally as a way to reduce emissions. There is a vacuum line connected to its top. You can try disconnecting and plugging that line, as well as the tube on the top of the valve. Or you can try adjusting the valve by turning the nut on the top of the valve that surrounds the tube. I have never done this, but I hear it can be done. When I got my new engine, my mechanic actually left the vacuum hose disconnected and the car ran fine.

If you search, you should find some photos. Or get the 911SC manual from Bentley. Even though it is for SCs, a lot of the info pertains to S models.

It worked... blocked off the valve and bingo!!!


Timing is OK ish now but the mnarks jump around alot - the person who built up my engine a couple of years ago said it's pretty worn - a job for the future..

Just one more thing to ask - upon deccelerating when driving I get a bit of 'popping' - sounds racey but is it healthy or a sign of evil?????

evil, but the healthy kind...

oh yeah...you should here it when my 3.6 with no mufflers does it, then again it's only under a real hard decel that it will pop a bit.
