Didn't see such an item listed in '72-'73 911 illustrated factory parts catalog. I wonder if such items are tightly controlled or even illegal to provide in a blank form given they could be used to "wash" a car's identity. Jim

I dont wish any difficulty on anyone, but I hope that blank number plates are not real easy to get. I will never look at any S or RS the same way if they are.

anyone that accepts the aluminum number plates at face value are not being throrough enough. There is a stamped number in the steel panel adjacent to the smugglers box and the assembly line number under the radio which is visible when you remove the kneepad. The dealer requires verification of id, registration before they can order replacement windshield , door jam, and emission tags. They do not show the long aluminum plate as being available- no prt #

Is assembly line number you write about the same number as the one written on the drivers side right under the dashboard?

The 'secret' production # of the RS. I took this to confirm the VIN of the car, just as Dave mentioned. Isn't that a lovely home-made radio mounting bracket?

Dave,

Have you called Stoddards? This seems like a request only the Factory could help with unless there is someone in Pelicanland that just happens to have already done this and doesn't need the blank plate.

I think I remember reading something once about car manfs. using special rivits to thwart crooks who would swap these plates. If so, that makes it less likely that you can find one.

Maybe the customer would be happy with something like a polished Al rectangle with a Porsche shield on it? Good luck, but it might be time to think about what else can go there...

Dave - the same thing happened to an RS-engined '71E Targa (bodyshop lost the Al ID plate) that I purchased recently from Kurt Zimmerman & he was able to order one thro' the local Porsche Dealer. He's based in Huntingdon Beach so it shouldn't be a problem.

They only sell the blank plate though (!!) - after verifying ownership/car's ID.

Speaking of plates, does anybody know how to properly rivet the metal paint code plate to the door sill? It seems as if a normal rivet gun won't work.

Thanks
