I didn't know there was a C3 lux
No, In Europe there was a 2.7 and SC lux, but I was only using the word as a comparative adjective to the other 2 cars I was looking at.

Here is one C3 test

DD74:
"Interesting back story about the 3.0 RS and why the 2.7 RS was produced. The one problem I have with the Rennlist thread is the 3.0 RS never came with K-jet injection. It was supplied with Kugelfischer (sp?) MFI. So that argument about the 2.7 RS being needed to make that year's touring group competitive, doesn't hold up.
Unless, of course, the Kugelfischer was a poor induction system."

The argument behind the MFI for 1976 was that the rules for group 3 specfied that the induction system must be the sme as what was available for that year. In '76 all cars had K-jet, hence the short run of MFI cars to comply with the rules.

Dave: They were indeed sold and homologated in Germany and Switzerland as "Carrera RS", it stands in the homologation papers with the authorities in both these countries, I have seen the papers. I can't comment for other years.
Also the right side mirror only argument is moot, because in certain countries, germany the first, a right side mirror was *not* standard, but an option until 1989 (!).

George: thanks for the information. I'd love to see some test results or write-ups on the 2.7RS. Would you know of any?

Bill: thanks for posting the C3 test results. I better find a magnifying glass. I did see, I think, a 5.7 0-60 time before my eyesight gave out...

...impressive...

I have fairly complete records for all those cars. The only 3 liters that I have documentation on are the mfi RS 3.0 and mfi SC/RS 3.0

Thanks Bill, my apologies for the confusion.

I have not seen or heard of one and neither has anyone else who knows these cars (i.e. GeorgeK and his contacts).

I had never hear of these '76 Carrera RS cars before I ran across one for sale in Austria last year. It was priced at about halve what a nice condition '73 RS Touring model was at the time. I contacted George to find out what was special about these cars and he filled me in on all their unique features and background. Turns out the car was not very original and had a non-matching engine case so I passed.

there were no targa RS versions
ever

RS was Rennsport = racing
a targa roof , has no advantage whatsoever for racing , some disadvantages more likely

so no RS targa

you might see targa's beeing modified to have some RS thingies like a tail , or light carpeting, but that doesn't make it a factory targa RS

The Kugelfischer side of the story doesn't sound right. Porsche has used almost exclusively Bosch injection systems (BMW on the other hand used Kugelfischer in the 2002Tii's). Conceptually both systems are mechanical injection pump systems with mechanical space cams, but I doubt that there are any interchangeable parts.

From a business perspective I couldn't picture Porsche investing the money to have a Kugelfischer system applied to a 2.7 911 motor for a couple of hundred units when they already had Bosch units in the pipeline. Keep in mind that this is the company that at the same time was building the 936 from various bits and pieces that were available to the competition department to compete at the top level of motorsports. Why spend all of the money for a homologation special GT and then skimp on "Top drawer" racing effort???

I had read (possibly in Starkey's R-RS-RSR book although I couldn't find the passage now) that Porsche did install some of the 2.7RS (with Bosch MFI) motors into a short run of long hood cars to keep the homologation for the that configuration motor active with either the FIA or one of the national authorities as GeorgeK mentions. Basically, once a car is homologated (as the 100+ cars and motor were for that year), many of the parts can not be changed, only modified for competition. So having CIS would be a serious problem. But once you have the Bosche MFI system homologated, you can update the pump and throttlebodies to RSR spec. It would make no sense to do this with a Kugelfischer system for this one year.

Porsche's Managers have always been too frugel to spend money that freely.
