Duck tail- i put mine on this summer couldn't be happier. I still have my Carrera tail if i wanna go back. I say go for it.

My vote is wide hips with no tail!! keep it clean and simple.

Sold my Targa last summer but here it is even with its slimmer hips:

84 Carrera 3.2

Here's a few angles on my 84 Targa as I was putting it into winter storage in early December. Still less than 70K miles on it and a fun summer driver.
Can't wait for winter to be over so I can take it out of storage and start driving it again.

1976 Signature Edition

Purchased new in August 1976 in Houston; after a "mild" rollover (the rear glass did not break!) in southern France in 1979, was shipped to factory # 1 in Stuttgart and a full wide body was grafted - i believe this is the first non-prototype wide body targa ever assembled by the factory. Still in the family and odometer (original) shows 48+k miles.

I notice a front lower valance chin spoiler.

The visual weight of this is greater than both the Ruf Yellow-Bird and 964 models in my opinion. Earlier models have a lighter look because they tuck in under the bumper.

This body expansion in front should be balanced out in the back to look right.

The Ruf Yellow bird had a tail (although not a duck), and the 964 has the extended slanted taillights plus a small rear grill spoiler lip.

If you are leaving the front chin spoiler shown in the photos posted, I'd try a Duck-tail and see if that balances it out some.

Right now without a tail, the looks nose heavy to me.

These observations are 100% subjective, others may feel differently. If they do feel differently they are obligated to state why (in my opinion) with equal detail and reasoning.

2 MB max?

I'd love to submit a picture of my beloved '87 Targa, but the site won't take any pics over 2 MB. I don't have any pictures of that low of resolution. I can say, though, that I specifically sought out a Targa because I wanted an open car, but wanted the increased torsional rigidity and the slightly larger rear seats of the Targa. Twenty years later, it still makes me smile.

Kudos for the Targa thread. The Pelican Parts Porsche Tech Bulletin family has been uber helpful with do-it-yourself 911 fixes. Cheers.
