Turning pulley and crankshaft
86 911. Trying to adjust valves. When I turn the fan nut clockwise, the crankshaft pulley below doesn't turn so I can't line up the marks properly. I guess the belt is too loose and won't grip?? Tried pushing on the left side of the belt to snug it up a little, but no luck. Any trick to getting it to turn? First time adjustment for me...be gentle.
Thanks |

Push in the middle of the belt. If that doesn't work take out the spark plugs.

I've had luck putting pressure on the left hand side of the belt and at the same time moving the ratchet/breaker bar in a bit of quick "jerky" motions. you may beat the top of a compression stroke making it harder to turn. Good luck!

Seem like a good time to adjust the belt or replace it. You can try moving one of the shims to the outside to tighten the belt.

Push in on the right side of the belt while turning.

this is correct. the right side. turn slower as compression builds.
