Thinking of a repaint...advice sought
My petrol blue beauty is looking a bit tired, plus the paint on the right front fender is cracking, which bothers the s@#t out of me...
Was tooling around during lunch today and dropped by my favorite local body shop just to hear their thoughts (unfortunately, "crash" my wife has had her Expedition in there twice in 18 months, so they know me...) He took a good look at my car... basically said he wouldn't do a spot repair of the fender because I would never like how it looked. He quoted me $3K-$4k to take the car apart, plastic bead blast it, primer and paint the original color, assuming no major body work once they strip it down.... He's done a bunch of older 911s, said it would take around 1 month. I assume new moldings, etc are extra.... Thoughts? The funniest thing is that wherever I go people always comment on the color and how beautiful the car is, imagine if the paint was actually in good shape! ![]()

Adam,
Could you pass along the name and location of the shop? Always good to have contacts. You can PM if you'd like.

Oh and by the way, paint is not original anyway (but it is the original color of the car) so I wouldn't be taking value away by claiming a repaint, its already been done....

That price sounds good. Here in Toronto a good shop will want more like $9-10,000 Canadian, which would be around $6500USD.
Just my 3 cents. Paul

It does sound pretty inexpensive. I guess if you see the quality of their work then you're one step ahead. What type of paint do they use? Single stage job? Warranty/Guarantee?

Thanks Rick-
Have to check the details, not sure about the type of paint.... What was that someone was saying about the slippery slope of 911 ownership....I'm hopelessly hooked....

Adam,
I recently had a glass-out, complete dissassembly respray with some accompanying metal work on my SC. The guy has been a bodyman for 38 years, owns a couple of 911s, and does P-cars as his part time job. He lives 150 miles from my house, but I felt that he was well worth the drive. He uses only Sikkens paint and charged me $4500. It turned out great, although there are a couple of minor issues that he wants to address just before I put the car up for the winter. Prior to that, I received other estimates in the Chicago area ranging from $6500-$9500.....and one of those higher estimates wanted to tape off my rear window instead of removing it. That sounds like a very good price, but you might want to carefully inspect some of the other cars that he's performed "refreshes" on. Steve

I think the price is very good. I don't see how he could do it for that. There is a lot of prep involved in getting ready to paint and a lot of assembly after you have got it blocked, sanded and polished.

I've researched this in So Cal, and the price for a "tear down, bare metal repaint" was between $5500 to $8000. This was a range from 5 different shops.

Hey Jerry! Haven't seen you around in a while, too busy out there enjoying the rebuild!
Anyway, yeah I thought it was cheap, I said to him, "what do you think, $5-$6K", he said, no way, 3-4 max....surprised was I..... I'll be shopping it around....anyway, going to deal with some mechanicals before paint anyway...this winter is a powertrain winter, maybe next winter is a body winter.... Adam

I was just quoted $7500 to take mine all the way down, block everything, and make it perfect. This price was on the condition that I remove and re-install all trim etc. $3k-$4k for a windows out bare metal job is a steal if the guy is good.
