 Why have tire guards at all? Were they mandated by the track or race sanctioning body? Just curious.

I've seen pictures of Spanish 917's, too, in "Marques de Riscal" (a -once famous, now less so- Spanish wine producer) livery, but I know nossing, nossing...about these efforts other than that they apparently once tried to enter Le Mans, but seems they did not qualify for one or another reason (I might have it wrong)...
