Pressing out monoball and bearing

After a long process, I finally discover that the used trailing arm I bought was bent. Could not get the car into alignment even to drive to the alignment shop. I pressed in ER monoball and new bearings, can these be pressed out to be reused? Otherwised, I'm hosed and need new ones.

Thanks,

John

You can press out the monoballs, but the wheel bearings might be tough. Might as well try though.

In both cases, be sure to put the pressure on the outer housing and not the center of the bearing. Use a peice of pipe or a socket of the correct diameter to do this.

If the trailing arm is scrap, cut the end of the arm to free the sleeve and bearing. Re-press into the new arm.

I have to send the arm back intact so that they will replace it with a better one. Could I heat up the arm prior to pressing it out with damaging the monoball or the bearing. I will remove the seal on the bearing prior, but the monoball is teflon coated. Does it damage the teflon coating.

Thanks,

John

You can heat it some, but excessive heat will damage the teflon.

I recommend boiling in water. That way you won't go over 210.

I assume we are talking about AL trailing arms? This won't help steel trailing arms.

The wheel bearing is history; it's a one way trip as I don't believe the outer race can be accessed to press the bearing out. Usually it has to be removed by loading the inner race which typicaly "Brinells" the races and flattens the rolling elements. Even if it seems okay it could have a very short life if you attempt to reuse it. Jim

Jim's right about the wheel bearing. Plus you're not going to get the wheel bearing off the stub axle in one peice.
