Reasons why my brother should keep his 911
My brother is contemplating selling his '85 Euro Cab for, gasp, a Chevelle 396. Please my brothers, 'splain to him why he is so wrong...

I guess I can ask what year Chevelle - or then again it doesn't really matter.
If you're looking for something to wax and take out every now and then as strictly a nostalgia piece is one thing- On the other hand, it's a Chevy, which means there really is no difference or unique qualities OTHER than pure nostalgia that would differentiate it than say from a 78 Monte Carlo, or a 77 Camaro. It's all the same basic thing. Don't get me wrong I'm a Chevy fan myself, but I don't get turned on by early iron like I used to, Some of us simply want the motor, who cares what it's bolted into. They're quick, handle like $hit, come apart under abuse, parts are cheap, loads of fun to drag race, but it's not the same as a Porsche, which is like owning a fine wristwatch, has quality. Nomex suit on, flame away.. rjp EDIT: Oh, and the nostaligia comes at a price. If it's earlier than a 71 He's looking at he's gonna pay for it for sure. Simply not worth the $$$ IMHO for what you're getting. Talk him into a 76 Camaro.

Might not be able to 'splain anything to a guy that would make that switch. Let him do it. He'll come back, maybe own both someday.

Yawn (boring). I guess if I were into impressing the rednecks round here, I'd sell my porshy & gets me a Chevy or a Hemi or sumthan likes that. About the only American car that impresses me is the new Z06 Corvettes. For the money, nothing will touch them. I grew up around muscle cars, dad was a body man & crew chief, & frankly find nearly all of them yawn (boring).

A Chevelle 396 is cool, definately has that nostalgic factor going for it that Randy's talking about. If he's looking for a car to get driving enjoyment out of, he's making a mistake. But, if he wants a car to cruise around in over the weekend and could care less about how fun it is to drive then he'll probably like the Chevelle.

Hasn't he only had that car for like a couple of months? He probably hasn't even had a chance to drive it properly!!

I owned a 69 396/350HP Chevelle. Caught the 911 bug and sold it back in the early 80's. It was a cool car and was FAST. But just don't try to stop or go around corners ......

Having sold my Chevelle 3 years ago to buy my 911 I can say your brother is a nut. I completely rebuilt my Chevelle from the ground up. It was my first car and I had it for 13 years when I sold it. By the time I was finshed with it I had dropped in a healthy crate motor, a racing tranny with a high stall converter, a 3.55:1 posi rear end and a load of suspension components to make it "handle". Very fast from a stoplight but it couldn't stop that well and my 4WD Toyota Tundra would outcorner it. I sold it and bought my Carrera. Haven't looked back once.
I honestly hadn't even thought about that car until I saw this post.

I think he is nuts too and Steve you are spot on man, he hasn't had the car long enough to drive it "right". A little NOVA fun run and his ideas of a Chevelle would be long gone. I am hoping to get him up here to Seattle and take him on a, ahem, little cruize to show him exactly how tres *****en these cars really are.

A guy's got to do what a guy's got to do, And most of the time that can be damn exspensive.
Muscle cars can be cool, but not quite as versatile as a 911. Like the old 911 ad's said, You can race them on the weekend and drive them to work on monday, or take a wife/girlfriend for a weekend cruise. Their so logical I sometimes wonder why everybody doesn't have one or two ![]() My neighbor has a 1970 W30 Olds that he's had for years. He was playing with a 911 on a twisty road once and over revved it and lost the motor as the 911 drove off into the sunset ![]() Lock your brother in his room with a bunch of Porsche history books and some food & beer and maybe he'll get logical. |

both would be nice, if instead of a bigblock chevelle, the other car was a 69 Z28! remember how easy it is to get to the spark plugs on a big block?
you know what is ironic? i may one day own a 69Z28, but for sure is will always have at least one 911. i know the firing order for a small block chev from memory, and i still need to look up my 911's. 18436572!
