New owner - key cutting question for 1979

Just bought my 930 of my dreams. The car only came with one key - non-lighted, so I believe a valet key???

I'm about to buy a blank key from our host... Can I go anywhere to get the blank cut? Or, should I go to a Porsche dealer or somewhere else?

Also, is there a difference between the valet key and regular key cuts? i.e. does the valet key doesn't open glove box?

Thanks!

I took the blank (for a lighted head key) down to the P-car dealership parts dept and asked them to cut it for me. I offered to pay the guy but he said no charge. (Wow a dealer that didn't try to mug me?) I figured if he cut it wrong, he can replace it. If the locksmith cuts a key wrong, they may not want to pay $20 to replace the blank.

I had my spares cut by a very nice locksmith in Pasadena, Texas. There are some blanks laying around out there if you look. They all worked just fine!

My offer of advice with keys usually goes ignored; but here goes... By the time your car is 25 years old the key is probably a copy of a copy of a copy, so for the sake of the lock, go and see a Porsche dealer with your chassis number and get them to source a master key (one that locks and unlocks everything including the glove box) from the Porsche factory. Sure you can keep using copies, but you may end up trashing the ingition lock and this is more expensive than getting a new key.

And the big plastic bit with the light is just a clip on that goes over the end of the key you probably already have.

The master key works all the locks, the valet key will only operate the door and ignition locks. They differ by an extra groove down the side of the key, the teeth are the same. The Valet key usually has a red end and the master has a black end.

I think I like this idea... Any idea what a master key should cost?

Nice car! Best color combo for a 930.

The local hardware store cut my spare for a buck.

Same here, Howard Cooper in Ann Arbor did it for free. They asked where I got the blank from, Pelican of course.

I went to three locksmiths, no deal..............go to the dealership first.
