Help! creaping ignition advance, weak springs?
Now that the project is up and running I am trying to get it all tuned up. I am really having a hard time setting timing.
78 SC 3.0 with webers. I am trying to set at 30deg max advance at 6K. I have no tach and thats another post. So back calculating from the max advacne of the dist I get about 10-12 deg BTDC at idle. Here is my problem. If I set the timing anywhere bast 0 deg TDC the advance slowly creeps up to max advance. of course, my idle speed goes right along with it. I have disassembled the dist. two times and I KNOW the weights are not sticking. I was wondering if stronger springs are needed. Do these dist springs wear out and lose their K? Is there anything else to check if its sticking? I can't find anything.

I don't understand your problem. At idle the advance changes or when you rev it? I do think springs can weaken with time and heat.

At idle the timing changes due to the advance. The dist is tight and I get about 20deg advace, equal to the total advance of the dist.
this means I can not set timing because it is dynamic when it should be static

Does the centif. adv. feel weak? Turn the rotor by hand and see if it is very weak. You can get springs a your local speed shop and try stiffer ones

the rotor turns and snaps back without any problem. compared to my targa I don't feel much difference in tension.
I see if I can locate stiffer springs
