how to replace the exhaust tip
I did a search and didn't come up w/ anything specific on how to just replace the stock black tailpipe tip. It looks like two indentations are pressed against the inner tailpipe. ???? FYI '83 911sc Coupe 3.0 stock single out exhaust.
Thanks, Don |
On my '83 I started by spraying a penetrating fluid. Turning it left and right in 30 minute intervals. I finally used two vice grips and was able to do 360's and work it off.

My PO decided to weld a new tip on. By the time he had burned the rusty tailpipe material enough to get it to stay, it was 'substancially shorter' than stock. My first purchase was a used muffler with a good tailpipe.

Don't you hate PO's and the things they do? Since I will never sell my car, only my benefitiary will be able rant and rave about me. And I will not be here to hear it! :)

When I added a second tailpipe to my Carrera I merely drilled a small hole on each side of the inside end of the new tip (the end facing into the engine bay). I then tack welded through the small hole on each side and sprayed a dot of black rustoleum over the tack weld.
Has held up well over the years. |
I used a piece of wood up against the back side of the old tip, whacked the piece of wood with a hammer until it came off.
|
I used the vise grip method. Jerked on it for about 20 minutes until I could work it off. Put the new one on in 30 seconds!
