Hard Targa Top find - score or scalp?

Got this for $100. I know it needs extensive restoration - I have the technology. I also got the little pieces that go in the windshield header. I've never seen one in person before, so I couldn't pass it up.

Score, or Scalp? You be the judge.

Wow- where did you get that- Pompeii?
It looks like there's a wad of human hair caught in it.

Let me know if you want detailed pics of a good one. I can take some more of mine before it sells.

I'd like to see the "after" pics on this one.

KobaltBlau 07-06-2004 04:07 PM

Thom, do you have a targa (anymore)?

john walker's workshop 07-06-2004 04:11 PM

hmmmmm.

widebody911 07-06-2004 04:19 PM

No, I no longer have a targa.

It's not as bad as it looks - no, really!

As you can tell, it was in a fire. All of the soft bits are ruined, but it's solid. I figured it's a rare enough piece that it would at least be worth attempting to salvage.

ubiquity0 - I'd love to get my hands on detailed pix of a good one to use as a reference.

There's pics of one on eBay. Good luck with the resto, but I've got say I'm dubious.

If you can bring that thing back from the dead, you ought to get into the restoration business and make millions. Given what those tops sell for, I guess it's worth a try.

al lkosmal 07-06-2004 04:47 PM

thom,
That is crusty looking, but you could put $500 plus into resto and still have a good deal.

Joeaksa 07-06-2004 04:47 PM

Thom,

Excellent score! I am sure it will find a good home when you are finished with it. Possibly you can even buy a Targa! :)

I'll try & take some this coming weekend & get them to you.

Thom, the main problem is with the latches. It appears the plastic part of the latches is gone and they can't be replaced unless you can find some used ones - good luck on that. The soft inner parts could be fabed out of dense foam carved with an electric knife then covered with vinyl. The side rubber is the same as a targa, very expensive new -can be found used. All in all a lot of work to wind up with a marginal part certinly nothing anyone would want to put on a nice car.By the time you clean it up, find and replace all of the rubber and hardware, paint or cover with vinyl, put in headliner you will have spent $500.00 for a part that will sell for $500.00
IMHO

I wonder if the plastic latches could be CNC'd out of aluminum? That would be cool.

K. Roman 07-06-2004 05:27 PM

Don't give up, I still wann see those "after" pics. ;)

azasadny 07-06-2004 05:30 PM

Score! You can fix that up, it will take alot of work and time, but you'll be able to sell that when it's been restored to someone like me!

ubiquity0 07-06-2004 05:34 PM

Is the fibreglass part salvageable? I wonder if the Pelican fibreglass skin would work, but then thats $500 by itself?
