Motor won't turn over- ideas?
2.2 S stored 10 years, never turned over in all that time. Dry california climate, atf down all the cylinders, removed the plugs, blew the stuff around, cannot even turn over the motor by hand using the crank nut. Any ideas on other solvents/ lubricants to free it up? (marvel mystery oil is basically atf, so that's not likely to help)
Thanks |

I know some folks in the aviation biz use a product called "Mouse Milk" to loosen rusted parts. I've used it in the past, and have been impressed. I bought mine at a place called All Aircraft Parts in Van Nuys. Mine was a small quanitity, though, and I don't know if it's sold in larger (e.g., quart) sizes.
Good luck. Scott

I've found nothing that beats Kroil for loosening up frozen stuff, no telling what it will do to the aluminum.

I'd say stick with ATF, my boat sucked in salt water after the heat exchangers gave out, I blew all the salt water from the cylinders a couple of days later then it sat for a month before I worked on it. I pulled the plugs and used alot of atf, after 1-2 days No Go, more atf, after one week I broke it loose and ran great for the rest of the season.
My .02

luckily it was not as stuck as we thought: the atf freed it up and it spins nicely with the starter now (after the customary turns by hand) . Thanks for the suggestions guys. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the barrels /rings are NOT wasted from condensation over this past decade

Dave,
Assuming the rings are rusted and the engine is out, how about rotating the engine 90º so cylinders 1-2-3 point straight up, then add ATF or MMO to the cylinders. Can you apply some oxyacetylene heat to the cylnders? Repeat on cylinders 4-5-6. Maybe the same treatment to the valve guides through the intake/exhaust ports and/or back off all the valve adjusters and see if the valves can move in their guides. It's either the bottom end, in the cylinders or somewhere in the valve train. Good luck, Sherwood |

It is truely amazing that one can take a motor that has been idle for years and get it a new life w/o tearing it down. I did it to mine and so far, it's been a great motor. I have another on the floor thatI'm tempted to try, but it's really for a future RS spec project, so maybe I won't. If mine blows, I will, though.
