911 3.2 Carrera Muffler Bypass Pipe

Anybody have any experience with these? Is it simply a megaphone? I am buying the fabspeed catbypass pipe, and figured for another $50, why not try it? If I don't like it, it is only $50.

First of all... it'll be louder than hell! Secondly, you'll need to fab a brace to hold up the cat or else it will eventually bend down from the weight and possibly damage your heat exchange while at it.

Try running your car without the muffler... you'll get the same impression.

Yes, it's just an exhaust tip, if you also get a cat bypass then your car will be extremely loud, have you ever been to a drag race or heard a car at 6000 rpm with no muffler, that's what you'll have. I ran for a while with the muffler bypass, but still had the cat, that was loud, but I liked the sound, the problem with any setup that bypasses the muffler is that the cat or cat bypass is then only supported at one end and can bounce around and eventually cause cracks in your heat exchanger and crossover pipe. That's why you see megaphones with the bracket that runs between them. That is the support.

If you run the muffler bypass you will eventually have to replace parts of your exhaust. If you only run it occasionally it may take a long time, but eventually it'll happen.

That being said, I liked the sound. It's actually not that loud inside the car, mostly just outside the car. Again, I had the stock cat on which did provide a fair amount of sound muffling over a cat bypass. People will hate you if you use both.

And this happens why?

v9ff, running the car without the muffler is nothing like running with a muffler bypass pipe. I tried it, the muffler outlet ends up sending much of the sound up to resonate around inside the back bumper. Without the muffler it's extremely loud inside the car. With the muffler bypass pipe the exhaust is brought out from inside the bumper/valance and is really quiet inside the car.

zerort, for the same reason that v9ff stated. Without the brace that v9ff mentioned the cat/bypass is held at one end by the heat exchanger and the crossover pipe. Everytime your car hits a bump the cat bounces. Eventually enough moving around causes a failure of metal. In my case the driver's side heat exchanger and the crossover pipe both had to be replaced. The nuts on the exhaust had to be cut and drilled out. I was fortunate that Jack was willing and able to sell me a whole exhaust sans muffler for a very, very reasonable price.

Wink

Oh, ok, now I understand. Sorry I was in a state of numbness when I asked that question.

I'm a little confused, did'nt the original question pertain to Cat bypass not muffler? If so would'nt it be possible to get a second hand Cat have it drilled out and cleaned internally and bolted it up, and keep the original for smog if needed?
