Question cold oil or not?

After a good drive, about 125 miles, I got home, shut off the car, and spent about 15 minutes cleaning it up. My question is about the oil lines inside the front fender. Ive been told that these get so hot that they cant be touched, but how long after you shut down the engine will these get cold? I reached in and could not feel any big amount of heat, hardly any at all. Is this normal? Thanks for any reply.

Depends on how hot the car is and how long you drove it for. The motor must at least get hot enough to open the thermostat located under your rear passenger wheel well. Otherwise the oil in the cooler will not circulate with the rest.

Now that it is getting cold out you probably didn't get the oil hot enough to open up the thermostat that allows the oil to run up to the oil cooler. If you want to make sure it is working, next time leave the engine idling for about 5 minutes after you drive. Idling will heat the engine up more than running the engine at higher rpms.

The drive was about 3 1/2 hours on open roads and some in town. The oil temp guage showed the needle going up to the first rung during the whole trip, which I dont know how hot that is. The temp today was 65, and sunny. Ill try the 5 minute idle next time.

The first black mark is ~205 degrees F. Just a hair under that mark is when the thermostat opens.

My understanding is that:

140* top of black block on bottom of gauge
194* 8 O'clock black dash
248* 10 O'clock black dash
302* bottom of red box

Phil is correct, on a stock gauge there are tiny numbers, 60, 90, 120, 150 that correspond to the degrees in Celsius. in the above pic I'd guess the car is running about 240* at idle (with no oil pressure ) For some reason I want to say that the external thermostat opens at ~195*, so it is possible that you didn't get the temp up. Also, I'd say that the lines to the front should cool off pretty quick in cool weather.

that is somewhat correct Masraum....lol this was the only pic I had that I could post w/the temp gauge in it. I have troubleshot that problem w/the no oil pressure @ Idle.

Turns out that the PO had taken it to a local P mechanic and they put in the wrong sender, I have since gotten a new sender and everything is running as it should....for some reason there was a 0-10 bar sender in there so the gauge was only reading 1/2 of the actual psi. I have also installed the cam oil restrictors.

I noticed a slight bump in oil psi but the car seems to also run cooler than before. might just be me though.

Thanks guys. My 3.2 runs at about the first black mark, sometimes just over. I think the oil line could have cooled off when I touched it after my run, but I was still concerned and will check it right away, with it at idle, next time out

On days I can feel that the lines are hot by touch.
Last night I had a 2 hour drive home along the coast, I was running the heater up high. And when I got home I checked the oil lines and they were cold.
Putter, around in some traffic your car will warm up pretty quick.
