Fuchs paint patterns?
 

I'm getting ready to strip the wheels on my '86 to restore the fading paint and woefully unshiny polish. So I read all the "stripping fuchs" threads, and now I feel pretty good about the whole process. The only thing remaining is how to repaint. Not "how," per se, but which parts to paint and which parts to leave shiny.

See, some Fuchs look like the ones on this beautiful '69 911, with the blacked-out backs and the silver highlights on the "petals.":

Others are all shiny, with no black paint at all (sorry, no gratuitous pic on this one).

The question: While I understand that my car currently has "period correct" Fuchs on it, when I get convicted of painting them "period incorrect," what is the sentence? See, I'm seriously contemplating either leaving them unpainted or just painting the low spots, like the early cars, and I'm a little concerned about how out-of-place the "early" wheel style might look on a relatively late car. What years came with which styles? In other words, if I go with the first style picture, how many years "wrong" am I making it? Will I be cast out by the Porsche community for painting my wheels wrong?

Comments? Death threats? Cries of outrage? Political commentary?

**Yes, it's purely a looks question, and it has nothing to do with the car's performance, and I know "it's my Porsche, I can do with it what I want," but I'm lookin' for some thoughts.

I think this was one option and the other was all black, but I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.

later on , they could also come in the same colour as the bodywork
but that was after the early ones, dunno the exact year it started

i'm not sure if Porsche ever had em polished, as far as i know they were annodized, not polished into a chrome like state

On a black 86 911 with no chrome the stock look is hard to beat ;)

not for nothing but I'd consider if the wheels will routinely be dirty due to NW weather? My wheels are like Michael's which is a lot bare metal that will need a monthly polish to look nice imo.
oh yeah, that's based on me living on a sandbar and thus knowing about the wet.

I had Al powder coat them clear, haven't touched them in 4 months.

Right - the question was asked about when the Fuchs went from black background with silver "petals" to all black centers. I'm pretty sure that the all black finish came in with the 1978 models, with the flared fenders and (for targa) blacked out roll bars. It may also have happened when the 911coupe got all black trim which I *believe* happened in 1979 or 1980 (my 1978 came stock with chrome trim). I may not be spot on with the dates, but I think I'm close. The "stock" fuchs (they were actually optional and 15" cookie cutters were stock back in the day) went from 15 inch to 16 inch around that time too. I'll go out on another limb and say that the 16" Fuchs were always black centred.

Porsche never produced all silver Fuchs, the all silver look is typically polished, while Porsche always did their finishes in anodizing. It's true that a few cars were produced with centres painted to match the bodywork, but that was pretty optional, and that started back in 1973 with the 2.7 Carrera RS.

My black fuchs look dull too. All I do is spray themm with some Stoner's Trim Spray and they are all black and shiny. It wears off after 2 washes but who cares, spray them again. This stuff is amazing, I even use it on my black Targa roll bar. Not greasy or anything. Seems like it soaks right into the paint!!! Beats a paint job or refinished wheels. IMO

I think wheels on a 3.2 Carrera or SC look best all black, how they came from the factory. But thats just my opinion, and I always like factory specs best.

I think silver petels just look a bit out of place on anything but a early car.

I prefer the anodised finish to chrome too.

Nice Porsche, Dan. I had the polished pedals on my p-car but I really like the all-black centers with polished lip. Will really look good on your color Porsche!!

Thanks for all the responses. Jasper, if you're right, then starting with about the SC's and ending with about the 964s the wheels I'm wearing now are correct. To redo it shiny all over would be clearly out of place. Additionally RoninLB's concern for excess dirtiness due to rain makes good sense. We're generally not prone to putting weird chemicals on the roads around these parts, but the continual rain would probably wear down a polish pretty quick-like.

The good news is that it can be separate steps in a project -- the first step can be to polish the whole thing. Don't like it? No problem, rough up the middles and paint 'em. :) I think I'll end up doing that eventually, but it may take me a couple weekends to find time again.

I thought the 3.0 carreras came out with all back too.

Yah - that could be. It's a flared fender car after all, and really just a SC without power brakes isn't it? :confused:

We didn't get the 3.0 Carrera in North America..at least I've only come across one maybe two in my life.
