100.5 projects?
 

Maybe I missed something, but I just replaced front rotors and pads. I tried using the 101 projects book , but there was no mention of how to do the fronts in the chapter on brake rotor replacement. Could someone tell me whats up?

Not to worry I followed the procedure in the Haynes Man., but I just found it curious this was left out of "101"

But I'll chime in. The 101 Projects Book is a supplement not the ultimate repair manual, information that can easily be found in other manuals such as Haynes was excluded to make room for other topics not found in other books. I believe he mentions this in the preface.

101 projects is a guide, not a manual. You will not be able to do every project in there without the bentley or other manual. If nothing else, most torque specs are not included in 101 and you will need those out of another book.

101 projects is great to see what it takes, and to pick up on the nuances to a job that any other manual will never tell you about.

101 projects is a "to do" list.

I counted yesterday. 43 projects - done in a bit more than a year! And that is whith about 20+ projects not being applicable (like carb rebuild, motronic etc.)

This book has given many people the faith in being able to work on their 911.

In the book, it says the front pads and the rear pads take essentially the same procedure (my words, not his), but I could not find anything on the front wheel bearings, etc., either.

I never noticed this before. It seems like a natural 101 project to check and grease the front bearings, replace them and how to on seals and races. Maybe more so than Project 97, "Personal Touches." ;)

I appreciate the responses, I know it is not a manual, but if a project is illucidated to the degree that Brake replacement is, I find it more likely an editorial lapse than intentional that the procedure for the front is not even mentioned in passing.

99.99% of the people who read 101 Projects have no idea of what goes on to assemble and create a book like that. Things like marketing, space limitations and other concerns are paramount in assembling 101 projects into 240 pages. It's very difficult - I'm grappling with it on the BMW 101 book right now. I chose the rear brakes as the brake example to use in the book because of the nuances associated with the rear parking brake shoes.

Note, that this was the first book that I wrote, and only the 2nd one in this series by Motorbooks, so we weren't really sure what it should look like. If I decide to do a 2nd edition, there will be some changes made - most notably the inclusion of the front brakes and a few other projects swapped in and out.

Another problem is a lack of a front brake / wheel bearing article on the site (anyone want to volunteer?). I haven't had time to do this, although I will be overhauling my 914-6 suspension if I ever get some time...
