Engine Mounts
My drivers side engine mount is completly gone just wondering what experiences people have had with replacing them, It doesnt seem like a difficult job so I want to tackle the problem myself, and should I replace both, if can u let me know if u have had any major trouble in replacing the engine mounts
Cheers |
It's quite an easy job. You can get "Sport mounts" which are a little firmer and will help the shifting aspect. Change them all, they are not too expensive

Ditto what Paul said.
It took me about 45 minutes to change out the rears on my SC. |

I would not recommend changing the engine mounts to sport or solid and not changing the transmission mounts at the same time. So, either do all 4 at the same time and go to sport, or do the couple of engine mounts at the same time and do them stock.
Just my two cents. Yes, it is a very easy job. I like to use a torque wrench for those small bolts. George |
Aigel - it seems quite a few people have run firmer mounts at one end and softer ones at the other. I haven't but what is the basis for the 2 cents? Is it that Porsche always matched the mounts?

Randy:
Well, this is something I apply from front engine cars, where people have cracked bellhousings and other connecting pieces, running non matched engine and transmission mounts. Mainly the opposite - solid trans mounts with soft engine mouts. However, I have not heard this happen in a 911. If one end is sloppy and the other is firm, something will take the torque. It may well be that the 911 is up to the forces that you get, it isn't a drag racer, but I'd still take it easy. It's just like shocks, springs or brakes. If the front is gone, the rear is probably there too. If those engine mounts are completely shot, the trans mounts likely are gone too. If you would just replace the engine mounts with sports, you will have shot mounts on the trans and sports on the engine. Again, it may be just fine, but why take a risk. Hope this explanation helps? Cheers, George |
Oh, so you're telling him to replace all 4?
I thought you were talking about putting, say, new (stiffer) cab mounts in the rear and new regular mounts at the tranny. |
Oh, sorry, not what I meant!
4 new mounts, all sport or 4 new mounts, all stock or 2 new engine mounts, stock and keep the old trans mounts. That's what I meant! George |
