big SSI/Muffler gap
Recently installed new SSIs on my 77 2.7. Everything fits well except for a 1/2 inch gap between the pass side SSI and muffler flange. I've checked the archives but can't find anything about a possible adjustment for the muffler to bring this gap closer (driver side is fine, pass is the problem). I considered cranking down on the flange bolt but it seems to put too much stress on the SSI and, in the end, probably will not be enough to bridge the gap. Muffler seems to have very little, if any, give in it as well. The pic is a bit misleading -- gap is HUGE (relatively!). Is there any adjustment I'm missing here? TIA!

There is a plate that hangs down and holds the muffler up it may be pushing the muffler out, there are two bolts accesible form the engine (by the pulley) compartment to loosen the plate. Try loosening the bolts and moving the plate around so it goes under the lip around the muffler. This may be the problem.

BD - is this the lip around the muffler that you are referring to? (pic taken, obviously, from under car....) If so, it looks like it is properly positioned.... Is there something else that I'm missing or don't i understand your reference? Thoughts? I'm stumped.

It looks good to me, the plate is not in the way. But the muffler strap seems to be bent up, is it in the way? Let me try to find a parts diagram it may help you out and give us a refrence.

I thought part #2 may be in the way, but it looks OK from your pic.

Previous pic was pass side, this is driver side strap and plate. Each strap appears to twist approx. 90 degrees in order to make the appropriate connection. Thanx!

The muffler straps should not be twisted, not sure if that is the problem though. The flange on the exchanger looks bent as well. Try it with out the straps and the plate loose.

It looks like the problem lies with your muffler strap. I don't think they should bend like that.

Everything fit perfectly with the oem exchangers. I'll loosen both straps along with the plate (the bottom two bolts -- closest to the ground, right?) and see if I can get everything to fit together. I've begun to wonder if it is the straps as well -- I just can't figure why one side is perfect and the other is off by this much even though both have this 90 degree twist. If this doesn't work you guys will see more posts tomorrow! Thanks a lot! -- Bob

When I mounted mine, I left all the muffler mounting hardware loose until I was sure everything was going to line up. Also, your straps should be completely flat all the way around.
