This is a job best left to professionals. I looked into whether I could replace the top on my 84 Carrera Cab a few years ago. The best advice I got was to try it myself only if I was insane. The second best advice I got was to call local auto upholstery shops and see what they charged to do it. The 911 top is unique so the secret is to ask specifically if that shop has done 911 tops before and how many.

I got mine done for about $500 a couple of years ago (the PO got an OEM top mail order from someone like Pelican) at a local shop that had done at least one 911 before. When I picked up the car the fit was pretty good but not great. The shop owner admitted to me that he would charge a lot more than $500 the next time he was asked to put a new top on a 911. After looking at all the work involved I considered some of the best money I've ever spent.

Do a search. There was a lot of discussion over the last week or two with plenty of photos. The rear window is the telltale of a good job - getting all the wrinkles out. They had prices from $500-$2,000?

I can't remember where I got it from, but I got a top for my '84 with a 993 style non-zip out window. It was also a one piece top, which made the install MUCH easier than the earlier two piece. I took the old one off, taking lots of pictures and figuring out how everything went on and worked, then the new one went on fairly easily. Came out pretty well too!

You have a two piece top . Can you do it yourself ? Thats hard to say , everyone has a different level of ability . Book time for this job is 12 hrs and thats taking in account you know what you are doing . If you have the least bit of doubt don't try it , if you try this and get stumped keep in mind alot of shops will reluctant to finish what you started and you will probably pay a premium . I'm not trying to scare you out of this , just a different point of view .

I did mine last year and chose for a professional shop to do it. It took three days and came out perfectly. It's a big job and it must be correct.
