Flywheel & Pressure Plate
Hi Guys,
Well, the engine is out of my recently purchased 74 911S. I did it to take care of numerous leaks and am now in the "While it's out stage". The clutch is down to the rivets and it appears the flywheel and pressure plate need resurfacing. Do they do that on these babies? I have attached a few pics of their current condition. Let me know, resurface or replace with new (ouch)? ![]() ![]() ![]()

You will need to buy a new pressure plate, but the flywheel can be resurfaced. However, who ever does this needs to have the correct cutter so you don't end up with a ridge on the outer edge of the flywheel. Do a search on here for "ridge" and "flywheel" for a discussion of how it is done correctly.

Also - there is not much excess metal on the flywheels even at new - look at the new cost against machining - new flywheels are not that bad money wise.

Make sure the one who resurfaces the flywheel knows what they are doing. If they don't scrub all the way to the edge, the pressure plate will not bolt up. You need a new pressure plate, so I would just get a clutch kit from PP if I were you. The flywheel has a recessed area near the edge. If you machine it down to that recessed area or beyond you will not have enough room to adjust the clutch cable after you install it. I had mine machined almost down to the recessed area, and had to adjust my cable to its maximum at the transmission and at the pedle cluster. I got my flywheel resurfaced for $20, so it was worth the risk.
