Rebuilding Master Cylinder
I just bought the rebuild kit for my faulty M/C. How easy/difficult of a job is this? Any tips or pitfalls to avoid? I'm assuming the kit comes with some sort of instructions.
Maybe I will document the whole thing for a tech article? What do you think?

Mike what made you buy the kit?--precaution or did you confirm it was leaking. I'm thinking that I might rebuild the one on my '72 as precaution. Don't know if it's necessary, but I'm thinking "every 32 years whether it needs it or not."

I'm sure a documentary would be appreciated.

Pedal went to the floor while approaching a RR crossing as the gates were going down! Checked everything, no leaks, no air bubbles when bleeding. Its got to be the M/C, right? I'm sure I will do the work and it will be something else.

Please document. I am changing mine out on my '73 and plan on rebuilding the one I remove in the future.

Would you need to hone if there is no pitting? What causes the pitting in the first place?

Only need to do light honing if there is any crude or discoloration present. Non-silicone brake fluid is hydro-scopic. It absorbs water. The water causes corrosion. Silicone bf doesn't give as hard a pedal in most cases. You have to flush completely the entire system to switch to silicone.
Just my opinion, BTW. |

I wouldn't hone unless you have experience. If the cylinder is marred, buy a new unit. The plunger donuts are sized for the diameter of a new cylinder, not one over honed.
If the inner surface is ok, clean the cylinder with brake parts cleaner and blow dry with compressed air. Use major amounts of brake fluid when sliding the plunger and donut units into the cylinder. Some people use SlyGlyd (sp), but I choose not to introduce silicon into the system. Good luck
