difference in shift couplers

What is the difference between the early shift coupler assembly and the later ones (after 1974)? Are the diameters of the amle part that goes into the shift rod different?

I ask because I am having a really hard time getting my shift coupler to go inside the shift rod.....

e.g.
Shift Coupler Assembly, New, 911/912 (1965-73), C-424-024-04
