Newbie - What's this car 88 911 cab "turbo look" really worth
Check out e-bay item 2484640234 or link below. The car is an 88 cab turbo look with 34K miles. I just looked at this car and it's almost pristine. Interior is a 10, paint is a 9, rubber is a 9, wheels are an 8 (chrome is a little tired).
I don't want to pay too much or make a mistake..... any advise is appreciated. This would be my first 911. Thanks. |

Looks like a beautiful car. I bet the reserve is up over 30k though.
Turbo looks are worth more and this is low mileage but if you are considering it, get a ppi done. Even with the low mileage there could be hidden problems. Hard to say what it is worth. Pretty much what you are willing to pay

I'm confused by the ad. It claims the dealer performed the turbolook conversion? If its a true factory turbo look it will have option code M491. If its an aftermarket conversion (even by a dealer) the value would be lower- probably a bit less than a standard carrera cab.

The conversion was done by the dealer (documented by paperwork dated 1990), not factory. Cosmetically I would say it looks very good for the age of the vehicle but I can see where the paint has a few fish eyes and imperfections that are obviously not factory or original in terms of finish.
I think this adversely impacts the originality (and collectibility) of the car as well. |

I think Beverly Hills Porsche dealer performed the turbo look steel conversion. Ubiquity0 the code M491 is just for factory mods.

I wouldn't pay a premium for the car, in that case, for the widebody look. For most people it would reduce the value of the car.
I'm sure in those days Beverly Hill Porsche was pumping out the turbolook conversions for its customers faster than they could snort. |

Based on his description, its NOT a factory optioned turbo-look and, therefore, not of collector interest. Frankly, Im suprised its at $25K w/o hitting the reserve price.

My takeaway from most of the comments is that the fact that the metal conversion wasn't factory diminishes the collectible value which is an obvious point as I am a car person, just not well versed in the world of 911's.
After 30 seconds I could tell the job was not factory due to minor imperfections (small fish eyes) in the paint and cuts on the rocker panels. I may pass on the car but it's a damn nice piece. You could have eaten off the floor mats. Unfortunately for me the owner is proud of it although it probably cost less than his garage door and about 1/5th of the two other cars in the garage (in beverly hills). |

I'd say its about a $23k car. Its super clean (good), late model Carrera w/ G50 (good) and very low mileage (good). Your average late model Carrera can be had for about $15k-$18k. Add up these extras and I think you get another $5k or so.
If this were a real M491, I'd say it'd be worth $2k-$3k more, due to relative scarcity and some real upgrades (like 930 brakes and suspension). Since this is a conversion, and seems to be done well, I don't necessarly take anything away for that, but don't add anything either. Kind of a push in my book. I don't think it hurts the "collectibility", as an 80's 911 Carrera is not really a collectible car. If you want collectible, go get a nice 72S. If it were me and I was in love with it, my love would probably start to wane around $25k.
