On "average", how often does a fan belt need changed? How does one examine it?

I keep checking the alternator belt on a regular basis, and I still see no changes, cracks, stretching, etc.,.

What all should I be looking for with inspection?

I change mine every other valve adjustment, and keep the one I just took off in the factory toolkit. If it breaks, you're stranded.
