Winter Project Phase 2

My winter projevt is to renew the front suspension on my '84 911 Targa. I have removed the complete front suspension, found worn rubber pivots and the ORIGINAL front struts (no wonder the front suspension bottomed out!). Rebuilding/cleaning/repainting all the components.

Todays project was to clean the wheel wells, below are the before and after pictures. Its amazing how much original cosmolene was there.

Here are some before and after pictures:

Started cleaning with a water based degreaser and a parts washing brush, washed it down with water. This left a lot of cosmolene behind so I moved to mineral spirits and a brush to dissolve the cosmolene and road tar. Followed that with the degreaser and then Dawn dish-washing liquid, clean water rinse and you see the result.

I have to do the second and third step to the other side.

Amazing how much goo there was behind the strut. Ill post a picture of the other side before I clean off the cosmolene.

The oil cooler cleaned up beautifully as well. If you get a chance, since you have the valence off and good access, I'd love to see a photo of the oil cooler bottom mounting bracket. I have a brass cooler that I want to retrofit to my SC, replacing the trombone, and I have to figure out how to mount it.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I'll try and take some photos later today. I see you are in Boston, my care came out of Boston, the previous owner moved to Cleveland from Boston shortly before I bought the car from him. I must have removed 10# of Boston beach sand from under the carpets,. The pedal cluster was completely buried! The oil cooler had about 1/2" inch of gravel and tar caked in. I still might take it out and further clean it, maybe at a radiator shop to have it flushed out. I'll be fabricating a screen to keep rocks and crap out of the oil cooler in the future

This car has 67,000 original miles, I disassembled the ORIGINAL struts when I started this project. The entire car is remarkably original.

Seriously wonderful job cleaning up the wheel wells. Hopefully our suspension tech articles come in handy while you continue to work on your project. After this, what's next on the list?

Wow. Hard to believe what people do to their cars. Glad you got all that sand out of there before it worked its way into something really important.

No rush on the photos. I'm months away from getting to it.

Thank you,

Mark
