Hot start problems - gas mileage suffering

I've been noticing that the starting problems on my '79 SC, especially the hot start problem seem to be getting worse. At the same time my gas mileage is down about 15%. This morning when I started it gave me a fair amount of smoke and that smoke didn't smell like oil.

I'm thinking that there is something going on with the fueling system that I need to look at. Can anyone give me some recommendations on where I might want to start ?

Incidently it seems that the fuel mileage got worse after I removed and replaced the engine. Don't know why.

Eric

Sounds like your mixture is too rich. I had the same symtoms awhile back. Could just need adjustment or your could need a new control regulator (warm-up reg). Unless you have test equipment and know what your doing you need to take it to somebody that does.

Eric,

By "replace the engine" do you mean you put your own back in, or is this a new (to you) engine?

gas mileage is bad? how about checking for a leaky injector(s) or CSV? check out the system with the CIS gauge, it will even let you know if the accumulator is bad.

I think Malone and Vash have good advice. Pressure gauge will tell you if your WUR is working right. Gas Analyzer will tell you if your mixture is off.

Your mixture may simply be off; set too rich. You can try leaning it in small amounts and see what happens. There also is a way to set it by raising and lowering the air flow sensor plate in the mixture control unit and seeing if your idle raises or lowers.
