That CIS mixture tool is sooo long
 

I bought the 7 in. long tool to adjust my CIS mixture on my '82 SC. However, I can't get into place to drop it into the 3 mm mixture screw-- not enough clearance. Fuel distributor, fuel lines, sound deadening material all in the way. I am thinking of taking a hacksaw to the tool to convert it to a 4 in long mixture tool. Thought I should inquire here if I am missing something before I get out the saw.

Get a Craftsman 3mm L-shaped wrench for a couple bucks and keep it in the glove box...

The Porsche engineers forgot that most people want to keep the engine IN the car when they adjust the mixture.
Ditto on the Sears allen.

use a disc cutter to size it.

Even if you cut it it is a PITA. That tool is completely worthless. I have it trimmed, but if you trim it so you can get it in nicely, it will be too short and the handle won't turn over the distributor / air box.

A regular allen wrench will do. You may have to pull it up and set it back into the hex screw if you do large adjustments.

There is truly no need for the special tool ...

i saw a mechanic's tool during a PCA tech session. he took a regular allen, disc cut it as JW stated and then he brazed on a nut. that way he could put a box wrench on the stubborn cars. i took a tape measure and checked, it was 4.5" long in case anyone cares.

i guess the one i use all the time is completely worthless. you obviously cut it a tad too short.

They obviously sent you the wrong size. I had this happen once, and I just cut it down w/ my Dremel, similar to what JW said. Just cut it off nice and square.

I also have hollowed out some of the sound pad above the screw area to allow the tool to fit in easily. If you do this, make sure the hole above the screw is plugged.
