Think I need to sell the 911 and get a 993! (longish)

....all my threads are longish, I like to write!

Here is why the 81 SC wide body has to go so I can buy any 993, I think.... (I tried starting a couple of threads on this to help avert this situation, but couldn't ever get a comment).

My SC wide body, my first 911 ever, came with what I consider enormous spacers (1" front, 3" rear) to make their 17" cup rims work. With 245s on 9" rims out back, it isn't nearly enough rubber to fill the fenders. Turbo flares without the turbo footprint. Looks good, but not like I want.

I had the opportunity to buy some Kinesis Supercups for a good deal, my 2nd all time favorite set of wheels next to those 3.6 turbo wheels. Problem was, they were coming from CA to me in Detroit and I wasn't quite sure of the fitment. Tried instant-G and all the other usual reference sites, but couldn't figure it out. Did some posts, still couldn't figure it out. So I bought 'em. What the heck, I figure. I have seen pics of SCs with 18" Turbo twists that look good, so there must be a way. I can make spacers at work if they totally aren't wide enough, but at 8x18 and 10x18, they should be better than my cup rims.

After cleaning them up from sitting around for years, I try to mount them. I am like a kid in a candy store. You can imagine the feeling. Get the jack in just the right place with the piece of wood to protect the floorpan, get the cups off, hold them up.... No go. Crushed, I stack them in a corner of the garaage and field comments from the wife every other month about 'what are those tires in our garage doing?'.

So tonight, I was thinking about how I need new rubber for the SC soon, and how the Supercups in the corner have beaucoup tread which leads to thinking what am I going to do with those, and then thought... let's my neighbor? 'Hey, can I borrow your car for an hour?' He has a 95 cabrio 993 (and not a pelican head). Put them on, and UGH! . Exactly like my fantasies!

So, now that I know what they look like on the someone else's car, that is all I can think about is getting a 993 so I can mount these puppies up! Crazy, cuz I would break the bank getting a 993, and truthfully, I love my SC.

What do YOU think I should do?

Its a little bit crazy to buy a car to suit a set of wheels you have, particuarly as you have stated it will break the bank. Sell/swap them for something you prefer on your SC.

yes...crazy. You're looking at about a $25K different between the two (give or take, depending on the details). For $5K you could get some Fikse rims that would fit perfectly and look awesome.

You should buy rims with the right offset... All the 90 and newer cars have a much different offset than than the pre 89 cars.

OK, I have drawn the following conclusions (some of them probably well known by others here, like the first).

1. Those cars I see on ebay once in a while with twists must be cheaper replicas, or if they are real, must not be non turbo rims and on a non-turbo body car.

2. I can only borrow neighbor Jim's car so many times before he finally tells me to 'go get your own 993'!

3. While shopping for a 993 would handle my 3.6 desire AND give me something to mount my supercups on, I am not quite ready to spend the money, yet. If I were, I would have been 3.6 shopping by now instead of browsing.

4. So I guess this leaves me to build a quick rigging tool to accurately measure the offset so I can advertise and sell these beautiful things. If they aren't going to fit, they aren't going to fit. Supercups only have a serial number sticker from Kinesis that I can find.

Oh well!

(this leaves me wondering if current turbo 996s have wheel spacers over a n/a 996?)

So, look for these to hit the classifieds.

Those impact-bumper cars on ebay with twists are Mille Miglia SEVENTEEN-INCH twist replicas, not 18s. Sell your neighbor the wheels and buy some Fikse or Kinesis to fit your car.

Can you post pics of your SC?

Why not keep the SC and get a 993 too? Its hard to sell off your first Porsche.

The 993TT's came from the factory with the same size wheels but different rear offset than their NB brothers. The 996TT's had wider rear wheels with a different offset than their NB brothers.

I bought a set of Kinesis supercups for my 84 Carrera. The rears are 10" and the fronts are 8 1/2". The offsets were measured for my car and custom made. Wheel Enhancement gave me a good price when they had the supercups on sale. They look fantastic.

Yes, simply sell the wheels. I'm sure you can come close to getting your original investment. You can look at this way, you didn't pay to have tires mounted and balanced and sales tax, if they were used (apparently). That money is always lost, so even if you take a small loss, you will come out.

Give them to hbrand to sell on Ebay. He'll get $10,000 for them and you could settle for half.
