window speed
 

I have a 79 930 and the power windows go up and down but both very slowly. Is this a reflection of the integrity of the window motors and their 25 years of function or is it related to the amount of current delivered to the motors.

Just curious if replacing the motors would speed things up.

I believe a search of others who have this problem will indicate the "works" are all gummed-up or rusty. I believe the drill is to open the door trim, go inside and lube it all up.

My '79 930 suffers from this as well. As soon as time permits, I plan on opening her up and cleaning/lubing. Will post results when complete.

Anything a newby should watch out for while removing the door panels?

Quite often the felts in which the glass rides wear out expose the rubber beneath, which grabs the glass as it tries to pass by. Try lubing the felts w/ silicone grease or spray. Then at some point you may want to replace them. They are not too expensive or difficult to do.

Also, sometimes the glass rocks while rising. Thjis was fixed by a poster by tightening a screw on the metal support under the glass.

When you remove the door panel, be careful of the small white plastic pivot pieces that are at the end of the steel rod connected to the pull flap that opens the door. They want to pop out and roll into some uncharted part of your garage. Don't ask how I know.

Pay attention to how this rod is oriented. A digital camera is handy for this type of thing.

I recently replaced my window felts. They do wear out over time. I was told not to try and lube them as this attracts dirt and only makes things worse. You do need to remove the window frames from the doors in order to replace the felts and use soapy water in the channel to get the new ones seated properly. My windows operate easier now. (I have crank windows.)

Taking the door panels off can be an adventure. Hopefully yours are in good shape. Mine were shot so I replaced them with RSA panels.

The window felts wear out all the time. Yours may be dirty. Yes, dirty.

For a check, you might spray some silicone spray on the edge of the window and window felts after cleaning them with a tooth brush and vacuum cleaner.

If the windows speed up, you can bet its something to do with the felts.

Try it, its cheap.
