rolling fenders...paint crack?

With my 7 & 8's on the 87 I have a rub on the drivers fender lip going over bumps.
Who has rolled their lip and had no paint cracking? only on the lip, or visible from outside.

What can the camber/ toe be set to ...to help?
PLEASE dont say ...use the search button...it takes too long.

I've rolled both fronts to some degree. Probably not as much as I should. Got just a little cracking - not visible from the side of the car - you have to look up at the rolled lip to see it. I had to raise my car a little because of the rubbing. I've now got just about -1.4 degrees in the front and still get a slight rub under certain conditions. I'm sorry I didn't put 23 mm torsion bars on the front instead of the 22s. I think that might have helped.

Warming the paint with a heat gun will soften it and reduce the chance of cracking.

takes too long to search or too long to read through the results? All I searched for is "rolling fenders" and I received all of these posts specifically related to your concern, the first one is your exact question:

Rolling fenders - how to avoid paint cracking
fender rolling techniques
Fender rolling tool
Fender & Tyre Damage
Rolling fender lip
Rolling fenders - the old-fashioned way
Leland...lip rolling
fender rolling
Show me rolled Fenders!
225s on the front

I could go on and on (there were many more results), but now it is your turn to do a little work.

Ken:

I put 7s up front on my 84 and had the same problem. I had the camber adjusted, did not roll my fenders, and the problem was solved. I'd rather have a little extra tire wear than risk cracking the paint!

I'm sorry, but I don't know the settings. TRE here in LA did the work.

Scott

thanks scott. Part of my dilema is the 87 is all original paint with virtually no chips or marks. I really hate to chip an all original car with 47k on the clock. maybe I will dial in neg cam first.

Ken:

I'm in the same boat as you...all original paint, and didn't want to take chances.

Talk to your wrench. He'll know how much to adjust the camber. Alternatively, send an e-mail to TRE Cup and ask Dave for the specs. He's a good guy, and I'm sure he'd be happy to help.

Scott
