84 Carrera odd sound.... perhaps belts (please?)

Hey guys

My 84 Carrera is making an odd noise... it's most obvious at idle. It sounds almost like an abrasive squeak repeating every half a second, at idle, around 850RPM.

It revolves making a bit of a squeak as I mentioned, twice a second, and does sound belt-like. It's high pitched, not a dull rumble, and has fully rises and falls (the sound) with a minute silence between shuffly squeaky oscillations.

All indicators are good, good oil pressure, just re-checked the level, engine runs strong. I checked the belts, they seem good, the crank belt and AC belts have what seems like close to half an inch of deflection when pressed hard with your thumb (I mean hard). I do note that the pulleys appear very brightly polished with a coating of brown rust-like matter on them. It's more like powdery material that comes off on a rag, not surface rust that is crunchy.

I've never had a 3.2 before, do they just make this squeaky chugga sound at idle?

Thanks for your input,

DMA

Replace the alternator belt. Just because it's tight doesn't mean it' not old and dry. Cheap $7 diagnostic.

True, sucks to live out in the sticks... nearest porsche dealer is one hour+ of driving.

David: Spray a little WD40 on the belt and see if the chirp goes away. Don't overdo it...a little will let you know if the belt is the problem.

Of course, be VERY careful if you intend to spray the belt while the engine's running. My suggestion is that you have the engine off, give the belt a bit of a spray, and then fire it up.

LOL! I have to drive further than that just to find another Porsche.

When you take the belt off start the car up and run it for a minute (won't hurt anything) and listen for the squeal. You should also see your alternator light burning brightly (makes sure it works also!)
