I know I know....... Yet another tyre size question!
I'm sorry to ask this, but y'all are the only people I trust with honest and informative answers.
I have the stock setup of 205/55-16s on 6" fronts and 225/50-16s on 7" rears. I purchased new tyres in January. I have decided that I would like to get some 9" fuchs for the rear and move my 7" to the front, to try and fill out the fenders some more. I have no problem purchasing a set of 245/45-16s for the 9" rears. If I had my wish, I would like to put my 205/55s on 6" aside for the future and use the 225/50s on 7" on the front. I know I can mount the 205s on the 7", but that leaves me with a new set of unmounted 225s and a set 6" unmounted rims. I would like to be able to throw the 6" back on without mounting and dismounting a bunch of wheels. I also know that if I run the 225/50s on 7" on the front, I will have to roll the fenders and possible dial in some more negative chamber ( especially when I lower the car this winter ). So this afternoon I put my 7" on the front to see what it looked like. These pics are with the steering wheel straight and just my body weight to try and settle the suspension after lifting it up. Does it look like they are sticking out from the fender alittle too much? From straight on, does it look like it sticks out too far where the bumper meets the fender? What do y'all think? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090445875.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090445899.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090445922.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090445972.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090446000.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090446056.jpg The fifth pic is the one I'm really concerned about. So who here runs 225/50-16s on 7" fuchs on the front of there Carrera or SC? Thanks for your time. BTW: 205/55s on 6" look really bad on the rear of a Carrera!! |
I can't help you w/ fitment wisdom, but that does look really funny with the 7's on front & 6's on the rear! You should turn up to a PCA gathering like that & feign indifference :)

I run 225s on 7s in the front of my Carrera. Had to roll the fenders. You could click on the link below to see some pics of the car.

Wow, Alfred that car is perfect. Thank you, thats exactly what I'm shooting for. You made the right decision not to sell.
Ubiquity- The only way I would show up to a PCA meet like that is, if I had it reversed on both sides and told everyone that my old car was an Audi Quattro and it handled awesome like this! |
I certainly don't think its a tire issue. You might pull the side wall in slightly with the 205, but really is 3/8" going to make it or brake it esthetically? If it clears and the tread is inside the top of the flare, I say go for it. Alfred's car looks great with this combo. Sometimes I think that once you go "wide", you have to be lowered to make it work. And since this is already in your plan.....
7frt & 6 rr: You could tell them it is your special autocross setup that helps "turn in" to compete with the Boxsters. |
That fit is about right. 225s, esp 225/50s, on the front are tight. You need neg camber, maybe some rolling to make it fit, but it can be done. If you're only going for looks, have the 205s mounted on the 7s. If you want more stick with 225s, you'll need the afore mentioned rolling/camber adjustments. I'm going to try 225/45s for a little extra clearance when my can is back on the road.
BTW, I'm can't quite place the writing style, between the British style "tyre" and the southern style "y'all". Southern England perhaps? :D |
Definitely going for more stick. Don't really care about looks so much as long as its not ridiculous for the street. I just thought that my car might have looked out of the ordinary today, but after looking at some cars posted before, I think its ok so far. Then again, I did say I wanted to fill out the fender wells, didn't I . I guess I 'm going for alittle bit of both. Anyway.
I agree with Luke, it must be lowered after the the 7s & 9s go on. Jazz- born and raised in Atlanta, never been able to say," You guys". The tyre/tire thing is I guess from working with too many lymies, English, sorry. |
Chack out my new post - Stage 1
I thought long and hard about the 225 vs 205 debate for my 7" fronts.
The final decision to go with 205/50/16 was based on: - Fear of paint damage with rolling the fronts - Added cost and tire wear of adding neg camber - Wanted to keep the steering light - 3/4 of an inch did not seem worth the added bragging rights Here are some viewshttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090459917.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1090460007.jpg |
