SF Bay Area Alternator shops?
Anyone know of a good alternator rebuilder in the San Francisco Bay Area, preferably south/east bay?
My voltage regulator seems to be on its way out. Thanks, Tom |

Call Rod at San Jose Starter. He's rebuilt 4 or 5 alts for me, mostly 911. About $125.

If Spuds says they are good, then they are. I have trusted him with my life - on the track with him behind the wheel!

Thanks guys, I'll make some calls tomorrow.
Driving home Saturday I noticed my voltage gauge reading 16V. I kept an eye on it, and it would fluctuate between ~14V (where it is normally) to 16V. I let it sit in the garage at idle, when it would swing to 16V, I could hear the idle change, as the engine load changed. I just pulled the alternator, and it has a "Bosch Remanufactured" sticker on it, assumingly installed by a P.O. I wonder how old it is. Tom |

To answer your question, Autoelectrics rebuilt my Marchal in an afternoon. Dropped it off in the morning, picked it up on the way home, looked and worked like new! Give them a call if you think your regulator is shot... Is your remaned unit internally regulated?

Nope, I'll let Sergio tell the story if he likes, no big deal really. I'll need to call on him again as an instructor in the future, so I gotta stay on his good side

Alright I'll confess. A slight off at Buttonwillow's Turn 13 followed by a full off at the same turn the following lap. My big mistake was bringing it back on course. Fairly safe in a 914 but not what you want to show to a 911 student. Spud got to experience a first class Grid Steward chewing out but second hand.

hehehehe... I knew Sergio would come through
The best part of the whole exercise was that was my first track experience with an instructor, and that was not just any 914, he had a 3.2L carrera motor stuffed in the back and it flat out moved

Follow up: I dropped off the alternator to Rod at San Jose Starter and Generator Monday at lunchtime, and picked it up today at lunch. It cost $150 with tax, (internal voltage regulator costs more). Installed it after work, and it fired right up, and the volt meter was rock solid at 14.
