I do have a pop off valve. I'm kinda new to this, is that hard to get at?

take off the airbox cover. you have to take off the big rubber band like things. unhook from the top, let them hang. then simply take the air filter off. the pop off valve will be right there. on the left. make sure it is closed tightly, it is spring loaded to open when the force of a backfire pushes it up, and the spring pops it closed again. sometimes a big enough backfire will push the entire valve out of the opening. in that case, you will need to clean things up and re-epoxy it.
oh, installed correctly, the hinge of the valve needs to be towards the back of the car, if opposite the airfilter gets in the way. check if the PO did it right. cliff

What was your idle like just as you were starting off? Was it smooth or irregular? What rpm?
Is the rubber bellows on the top of the mixture control unit unseated itself from the explosion?

Mine will do this if I don't let it warm up enough and take off to quick. If it's the same problem, you can let it sit for a while (30 minute to an hour) and it should start up. I usually remove the air box top and filter, push up on the air meter plate, and let the injectors squeal for about 5 seconds. It will then start with a few seconds of cranking in a puff of white smoke.

thanks guys ill take a look when i get home. hopefully its nothing too serious.
the idle was normal and i was going to accelerate to leave in 1st gear, then it hesitated (which it sometimes does when its not warm enough) then stalled. |

What was the idle speed? 1200-1500? What is your warm idle speed?
You could be having the very common WUR/AAR problem of not a high enough idle @ cold start. Try blipping the throttle a few times before you actually take off. It's possible your plugs are just a little loaded up.

Check your fuel pump relay. Its the red one on your fuse box.
You can swap it with a black one to check and see if it is working. Also check your fuses, both in the trunk and in the engine bay. The engine bay ( left hand side behind a plastic cover.)

Those numbers seem good. We're going to have to try to look elsewhere. It would still be a good idea to check your control pressures anyway, if you have the pressure gauge.
Have you tried to start the car since then? It is always a good idea to check things like the wires, plugs, cap and rotor. And make sure that bellows is in place, as well as checking for air leaks. Make sure the popoff valve is securely fastened in place and oriented correctly as Vash said. Let us know.

i went home last night and checked the pop off valve, its ok and facing the right way. nothing seems to be out of place, the bellows on the mixture control unit seems be where it should. all the fuses look ok.
i can hear the buzz of the fuel pump when i try to start it. the car turns over fine but doesnt even come close to firing. its not like the car sits around and never gets driven. i drive it almost every day, and i drove it the night before this happened. i didnt get a chance to look at the plugs (not the easiest to get at with ac and heat-- I guess its time to get rid of them too) im kinda stumped now. could the plugs get fouled up that quickly? |
