Condenser Question
Anyone know why Pelican doesn't list a distributer condenser for the 68-73 911's? The website shows 2 condensers for the 912. Will they work on a 911?

CDI (ignition) doesn't use a condenser.

67and 68's don't have CDI. Surely Pelican has a condenser for the distributer.

Well, you ask about years that didn't use a condenser, so I say they didn't use a condenser. Pelican can get you whatever you need if you ask. For immediate info, look here.

The tongue-in-cheek reply would be 'that is a subtle hint that you SHOULD have a CDI system!' And it would be the truth, too!
Surely, you don't buy into that old wive's tale that the condenser should be changed everytime you change the points ... because they are 'matched' to the points??? Seriously, in over 40+ years of working on battery-coil ignitions ... I have yet to see a failed condenser! IMHO, just leave the old one in place! Or replace it with a generic part from a local store ... they aren't a critical part at all, and, believe me, your Bosch points won't be at all upset with the brand mismatch!

I guess he needs to know (or wants to know, so he can take a shortcut) if he can substitute a 912 cond in place of the 911. That, I couldn't say.

Getting ready for a tune up and thought I would go ahead and replace the condenser. I'm having some trouble with the engine mis firing right now so I am going to replace the points, rotor, cap and plug wires. With my luck if I don't change the condenser, that will be the part that's bad. But if you guys don't think it will cause a mis fire I won't worry about it.
Thanks |
