Question Injectors , fuel pump problem?

On my way home today the car (1988 Carrera Coupe) started smelling of fuel. This had never happened before... so I became suspicious.
As I drove along the smell became nearly unbearable. At idle the car started smoking but not through the exhaust pipe.
The color of the smoke was grey.

I managed to get home. By the time I got there the engine had a really rough feel.

At home I opened the engine lid and the smoke seemed to be coming from the top valve cover on the driver's side.

The connector wires to the spark plugs were covered in fuel but the rubber ends of the wires (the ones that sit on the valve cover holes) seemed clean.

As I tried to figure what was wrong I noticed that there was fuel everywhere between the driver' side valve cover and the fuse box.

The airbox is on the way but I notice fuel dripping off the fuel rail, as if the fuel pressure test cap was not properly tighten.

So I switched off everything and here I am asking for advice before I go to the next step.

One last thing... I installed a Stewe Wong chip 1 month ago. 600 miles no probs... Double DE this past weekend.

Could have I damaged the engine control module (ECM) when installing the chip?

Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

you need to locate from where that fuel is coming from. Be careful and have an extinguisher at hand just in case. Do it outside and you could disconnect the CD box just to be on the safe side. Don't mess with raw fuel. Dry everything first and turn key till you hear fuel pump running.
Look for suspicious fuel connections.
Good luck and be safe and careful.
Truly, Phil.

You have fuel leak somewhere which is a physical problem. A chip couldn't cause it, although Loren would probably argue otherwise. Check the fuel lines and fuel rails behind the engine compartment, and the fuel filter and the lines to it, which are on the left side of the engine compartment, fuel pressure regulator which is in the left rear. Most likely there is a leak in one of the lines or hoses. Some owners had found the flexible fuel line in the back deteriorated and started to leak. A couple of guys cars caught on fire and were totaled. You are lucky yours didn't. If you can jump your fuel pump to run with the engine off, that may help you find your leak easier. DO NOT drive the car any further until you fix the leak.
