weird charging problem on transplant car

My 73.5 T had a 78 SC motor. I just swapped in a healthier 79 SC ROW motor. It runs great except for two problems. The Tach does not work and the car is running off the battery but the idiot light is not on?? It took me several weeks to realize that the battery was not being charged. I have not driven it that much. Is it posssible the new motor came with an old externally regulated alternator - the chassis has no regulator because the old motor had an internally regulated alternator. Would the car even run like that? I am not to swift with electrical stuff.

Oh I did check and the volt meter reads the same at the battery wheather the car is running or not - +/- 12v.

I dont even no what to check? Any ideas, does some body have an old regulator I can plug in and see if that fixes it?

I know the alternator worked in the old car - I dont have access to see if it had a regulator on it.

TIA

The '79 motor would have the externally regulated alternator. You'll need to either install an internally regulated alternator or backdate the car to the external regulator.
