flirting with disaster?
I have narrowed my clack to the intake rocker on #3 for absolutely sure. I wouldn't keep bothering the list with this same issue, but its getting louder and and louder every time I run it.
Would it be "crazy" to just remove that single intake rocker, then start it up one cyl down, just to hear if the noise disappears? Then immediately shut it off again. Then I wouldn't need new cam towers & cams, but rather just a new rocker on that cyl. Am I flirting with disaster? If not this, I am looking at at least $1K with E cams, cam towers, engine stand , dropping the engine and trying cam timing all for the first time. Would be nice to just replace 1 rocker.... michael

Probably not!
However, you may not even have to start the engine, because the evidence may be overwhelming ... when you have the rocker and shaft in your hands to inspect!

I'm not sure how starting the car like this will help anyway, as you mentioned earlier that the 'clack' only started when the engine was warmed up. Either you need to remove the rocker from a hot engine & restart (ouch!) or let ir run fro quite some time with 1 rocker removed, until the engine reaches operating temp (scary.)

Ok, I pulled the screw and the washer that deforms the shaft into it's housing. But the shaft only plays about 5mm back and forth. Should I try to gently drive the other 8mm nut out or is there another technique?
So close no I feel... michael

Ok, got the shaft out. I think I do see something. Exactly 7mm from the top of the face or about 4mm from the top of the polished surface, there seems to be a place where the lobe might be hitting late. There is alos some pitting to the face in that area. Other than that, the face looks like a perfect arc and not deformed at all.
What should I be looking for? Michael

I was looking through the maintenance records on my 81 911SC and at 51K a ticking developed on #6. Wrench (Bud Hart San Jose) replaced failing #6 intake rocker and cam shaft.
From my experience with aircraft engines any pitting on cam lobes is very bad news.
